ABOUT THE ARTIST

This is a picture of one of my current dogs, Xander a Golden Retriever puppy.
My dogs are and always have been my inspiration. Our hallway at home has paintings of the dogs I have had over the years. See the GALLERY below.
However, I have not always been an artist. I spent around 30 years as a Beauty Therapist, running my own business for over 20 years. I made a radical change in 2010 and became a dog trainer for nine years.
About 7 years ago a friend introduced me to ceramics where I began to find an interest in the painting side of my work. I produced a few plaques on which I painted my then dogs Burt (a Springer X GSP) and Tyler (a Golden Retriever). I attended a pet portrait painting workshop and this sparked my interest in pet portraits.
In 2019 I had a large basal cell carcinoma treated on my nose. I was unable to work as a dog trainer for a number of weeks due to a risk of infection or damage by any dogs I may have handled so I spent more time on my painting skills. Eventually I decided I wanted to concentrate on my pet portrait painting which I continue to do today.
My Portraits Today
I started painting portraits of friends dogs but now take commission requests for pet portraits via recommendation from others or my Facebook Page. I not only paint dogs but I have extended my repertoire to other animals including cats, horses and even a weasel. I have also include some humans!
My main medium is acrylic paint mainly on canvas. I experimented with watercolour and oils but have found acrylics to be my favoured paint.
I work from a photograph of the pet selected by the person I am painting for, sometimes taking elements from other photographs as I endeavour to create the right colours of the animal, particularly the eyes and finding features hidden in the main photograph. I do not work to create an exact copy of the photograph (thats what the photo already does!!) but my own interpretation of them.
